The Member of Parliament for Suhum, Hon Frank Asiedu Bekoe, has sounded the alarm on the worsening transport situation in Accra and Kumasi, warning that the growing car scarcity and inflated fares pose a national security threat.
Speaking to Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Hon. Bekoe emphasised that the situation is not only affecting productivity but is also a serious attack on the economy. “Ghanaians are finding it tough to get cars to work, and it’s even harder when someone is sick and needs urgent medical attention,” he stressed.
Hon. Bekoe blamed the NDC government for the crisis, saying Ghanaians are already suffering under their leadership and shouldn’t be further punished with exorbitant transport fares. He dismissed the government’s attempts to shift the blame to drivers, arguing that the transport system has not been strengthened and regulations are lacking.
“The government should resource Metro Masa and Ayalolo transport systems, buy more cars, and make them functional,” Hon Bekoe urged. “The public transport system has collapsed, and it’s time the president wakes up to the cries of the people.”
While acknowledging improvements in economic indicators like exchange rates, fuel prices, and inflation, Hon. Bekoe insisted that these gains are not reflected in Ghanaians’ pockets. “The system is still hard, transportation fares have tripled, and people are suffering,” he said.
He attributed the reduction in fuel prices to global market trends, rather than government performance, and accused the administration of pumping billions into the economy to artificially prop up the cedi.
