The Ministry of Interior has extended the deadline for the gun amnesty initiative, which was initially set to conclude on January 15, 2026.
This decision follows requests from stakeholders to prolong the deadline, allowing individuals who have not yet surrendered their unlicensed firearms to do so.
The gun amnesty initiative was launched by the Ministry of Interior under the directive of President John Dramani Mahama.
Under this initiative, individuals possessing guns without proper authorisation or licensing are encouraged to surrender them without fear of arrest or prosecution.
According to officials, over 1,500 guns have been received since the exercise began, with some individuals surrendering their firearms and others applying for licences to retain theirs.
The deadline extension now sets the new cutoff date as January 30, 2026.
Individuals with unlicensed guns are urged to either surrender their firearms or follow the established legal procedures for licensure.
Possessing a gun without a licence is a felony offence, punishable by a fine, a ten-year jail term, or both, upon conviction.
