EC sets March 3 as date for Ayawaso East by-election

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that it will hold a parliamentary by-election in the Ayawaso East Constituency on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, following the death of the Member of Parliament for the area, Mahama Naser Toure.

This was contained in a statement issued by the EC on Friday, January 16, 2026.

The EC noted that the seat became vacant after the unfortunate passing of the legislator. In accordance with Article 112 (5) of the 1992 Constitution, as amended, the EC is required to conduct a by-election to fill the vacancy.

According to the EC, nominations for prospective candidates seeking to contest the election are now open. Nomination forms will be received at the Ayawaso East Municipal Office of the Commission at North Ridge from Monday, February 9, 2026, to Wednesday, February 11, 2026.

Nominations will be accepted between the hours of 9:00 am and 12:00 pm, and from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm on each of the stated days.

The EC added that interested candidates are required to download nomination forms from the Electoral Commission’s website from Friday, January 16, 2026, to Wednesday, February 11, 2026.

A prospective candidate may personally submit the completed nomination forms or have them delivered on their behalf by either the proposer or seconder of the nomination to the Returning Officer at the Ayawaso East Municipal Office.

The filing fee for the election is Ten Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH₵10,000.00) per candidate.

However, the filing fee for female candidates and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) is Seven Thousand Five Hundred Ghana Cedis (GH₵7,500.00).

According to the EC, all completed nomination forms must be delivered in quadruplicate.
