The Acting Director of Research, Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation at the Small Arms Commission, Mr Asante Gyebi, has stated that all firearms surrendered under the national gun amnesty initiative will be destroyed.
Speaking on the authority of the Minister of Interior, Mr Gyebi disclosed that the guns would be destroyed after the amnesty period.
During an interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM with host Kwabena Agyapong, he revealed that over 3,000 unregistered guns had been recovered through the initiative.
Mr Gyebi explained that some gun owners had opted to surrender their firearms, while others intended to apply for licences or authorisations.
According to him, the Interior Minister’s directive is sufficient for the destruction of the surrendered guns without requiring a court order. Mr Gyebi emphasised that the gun amnesty is a valuable initiative aimed at removing unregistered firearms from circulation.

“The unregistered guns will be destroyed. We have been conducting regional destruction exercises. After the amnesty period expires, we will gather all surrendered guns and those retrieved by the police and destroy them. This will prevent them from falling into the wrong hands.”
He urged Ghanaians to take advantage of the extended deadline from January 15 to January 30 to surrender their unlicensed guns or apply for licences, warning that those who fail to comply would face felony charges, punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment, fines, or both.
