The Second Deputy Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament and MP for Fomena, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, has taken a swipe at Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, accusing him of failing to deliver on his mandate.
He suggested that the man once touted as an “economic wizard” failed to bring his expertise to bear in the management of the country’s finances.
Speaking in a media interview, Amoako noted that Ghanaians were led to believe Dr. Bawumia was recruited specifically for his technical ability to manage the economy. However, he expressed shock at the severity of the economic crisis experienced under the Akufo-Addo administration.
“The fact of the matter is that Ghanaians were made to understand that Dr. Bawumia was brought in to help Nana Addo ensure the economy thrives. When it came to the economy, everyone knew Dr. Bawumia was ‘number one,’ and that was the reason he was chosen to assist the President. This is a point espoused by Nana Addo himself.”
He further argued that the economic downturn under the Vice President’s watch has created a public paradox.
“If the economy faces struggles under his watch, people start questioning why someone branded as an economic wizard could not manage things to the point where we couldn’t even pay bonds,” he said. “The state of the economy did not help his reputation as a leader at that time. That is why many believe he didn’t do well. However, once the majority decided he was the one to lead [the party] in 2024, that was it.”
When asked whether he supports the decision to elect Dr. Bawumia as the party’s presidential candidate, the Second Deputy Speaker declined to comment.
