The Deputy Minister of Transport, Hon. Dorcas Toffey, has revealed key strategies being implemented to address the pressing issue of traffic congestion and transportation challenges in Accra.
Speaking to the media, Hon. Toffey highlighted the outcomes of Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman’s recent meeting with the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and other transport unions. According to her, these discussions have yielded significant improvements in the sector.
Hon. Toffey stated that she has personally inspected congested areas in Accra to better understand the challenges.
The Ministry has deployed additional buses, and transport unions have agreed to reduce fares to increase vehicle operations. New fleets of vehicles are expected soon, including 300 Metro Mass Transit buses from Egypt, with hundreds arriving by February 15, 2026, and April 2026.
The Deputy Minister disclosed partnerships with private investors to bring in more vehicles, aiming to make traffic congestion a thing of the past. She noted that the current administration has rehabilitated 15 Metro Mass buses, with over 135 vehicles currently operational.
Hon. Dorcas Toffey assured the public that the Minister of Transport, Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, and his team are working diligently to revive the transport sector, promising visible results soon.
