The Executive Director of Peace Watch Ghana, Madam Nyonkopa Daniels, has expressed profound gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama, Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Chief of Staff Julius Deborah, and other influential individuals who played a pivotal role in preventing what she described as an unlawful encroachment on lands allocated for lorry stations at the Cocoa Marketing Board (CMB) area.
It would be recalled that the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and allied groups staged a major demonstration in Accra’s Central Business District on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, to protest the purported takeover of the said lands by private developers, allegedly backed by the Railway Authority.
The protesters, comprising drivers, traders, and market women, later petitioned the Chief of Staff, seeking intervention in the matter.
Subsequently, the group presented a petition at the presidency, which was received by Bridget Otoo, presidential staffer in charge of government communication, who assured them that their concerns would be thoroughly reviewed and addressed. According to Madam Daniels, directives have been issued to halt any attempts to sell the land.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, she expressed the immense gratitude of the market women, traders, drivers, and other individuals operating at the location to the government for their swift response.
She specifically commended the vice president, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, and first lady Lordina Mahama for responding to their appeal for intervention, noting that without their efforts, thousands of traders and informal workers would have risked displacement if the projects had continued.
“We have received some good news. We staged a demonstration last year over the unlawful takeover of the land where drivers, traders, and market women operated. We petitioned three Chiefs of Staff, the Vice President, the First Lady, and other individuals who have come through for us. The swift response with which the government responded to our appeal has been commendable. Several traders would have been affected if they had not intervened, and so on behalf of all those who raised concerns over the unlawful takeover, we are grateful.”
