The Ghana Police Service has arrested seven suspects linked to a high-profile highway robbery involving a member of the Council of State.

The update was provided by COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), during a press conference on Thursday, January 29, 2026.

“The police have arrested seven suspects in a highway robbery involving a Council of State member, which occurred sometime last year,” she stated.

The robbery took place on July 21, 2025, along the Tamale–Buipe Highway. The victim was ambushed by six armed men and stripped of several personal valuables.

“He was robbed of mobile phones, some cash, wristwatches, reading glasses, a laptop and other items,” COP Donkor said.

The breakthrough in the case came on January 11, 2026, after CID intelligence led an Anti-Robbery Unit team to Salaga in the Savannah Region.

This operation resulted in the arrest of Rashida Yussif, who was found in possession of an iPhone 7 Plus stolen during the attack.

“The phone was retrieved,” COP Donkor confirmed.

Following the trail of the stolen device, police moved to a mobile phone shop at Dagomba Line in Salaga.

The timeline of the subsequent arrests unfolded as follows:

Aaron Abana Baswi Fanga: A shop attendant arrested at the scene. He claimed the phone was supplied by his uncle.

Wilson Avasong: An environmental officer and shop owner arrested in Tamale. He claimed he purchased the phone for GH₵1,000 from a repairer.

Muntaro Idrisu (alias “Virgin”): A phone repairer arrested at the Aboabo Market in Tamale. He eventually led officers to the suspected source of the device.

The investigation reached a critical point at Dungu, a suburb of Tamale, where police apprehended Aminu Zebrilla (alias “Bedman”), a 35-year-old motorbike rider.

“Aminu Zebrilla admitted selling the phone to Muntaro Idrisu for GH₵650,” COP Donkor said.

A subsequent raid of Zebrilla’s residence uncovered a significant cache of weapons and suspected stolen property. COP Donkor detailed the findings:

“A search conducted in the room of suspect Amin Uzebilla resulted in the retrieval of several items, including a locally manufactured shotgun, one locally manufactured pistol, four live BB cartridges, one locally manufactured sword with the inscription ‘Bedman’, one live 5.56 x 44 CZ ammunition, two live revolver ammunition, one face mask, one jackknife, a quantity of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, one talisman, one cutter, one catapult, 15 assorted mobile phones, one jungle motorbike, 17 assorted race watches, five pen drives, one telecell SIM card, and three MTN cards which were removed from the phones that were snatched from victims during the robbery.”

Police revealed that Aminu Zebrilla is a repeat offender with a history of violent crime.

“Further investigations revealed that Aminu Zebrilla is an ex-convict who was convicted of robbery in 2012. Two other accomplices, Inusa Sumaila, also known as Agenda, age 42, and Haruna Safiano, age 32, were both subsequently arrested from their hideout behind the Tamale China Mall,” COP Donkor added.

While seven suspects are currently in custody, the Ghana Police Service emphasised that the case remains active as they pursue the remaining members of the gang.

“Police investigations are ongoing to apprehend other suspects believed to be on the run and to retrieve a weapon believed to be in their possession,” she concluded.
