Ing. Kwabena Agyepong, an aspiring presidential candidate, has urged his competitors and their supporters to refrain from attacks as party delegates participate in Saturday’s presidential primary to select a flagbearer.
He cautioned that excessive hostility could compromise the party’s unity and public image. Addressing journalists at the NPP headquarters on January 31, 2026, the former General Secretary of the party noted that certain boundaries had already been crossed.
He counseled party actors to conduct themselves with restraint and respect, emphasizing that intemperate language could have long-term consequences for the party.
He stressed that the ultimate objective of the primaries should be to present a candidate capable of uniting the party and appealing to the broader Ghanaian electorate.
“I think that some red lines have been crossed. There are five of us contesting. At the end of the day, only one person will be elected; five cannot go into one,” Mr Agyapong said.
“So people have to be very decorous, civil, and careful about what they say about others. At the end of the day, you don’t know who will win; we are all hoping that the winner is us,” he stated.
“After we win, we should be able to represent our party well to earn the respect and the confidence of the Ghanaian people,” he said.
He noted that such activities could affect the party and the candidate who would be elected. He questioned how the party would effectively campaign if internal rivalries degenerated into personal vilification.
“If you have lambasted and said things that are unprintable about your fellow, how do we then go and sell the person?” Mr Agyepong added.
