Koku Anyidoho, a former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has commended his party for issuing a formal statement congratulating the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on its successful presidential primary.
Describing the gesture as a hallmark of Ghana’s democratic progress, Anyidoho noted that such actions demonstrate the nation’s growing political maturity.
Drawing on his experience as an ECOWAS election observer, he remarked that this level of cross-party civility is rare across the sub-region, making the NDC’s gesture particularly noteworthy.
The official statement, issued by NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, praised the NPP for the smooth conduct of the primary.
The NDC further acknowledged those who accepted defeat with reconciliatory concession speeches, though it stressed the importance of those individuals “walking the talk” in the days ahead.
“The National Democratic Congress hereby offers its congratulations to the opposition New Patriotic Party for the successful organisation of a violence-free presidential candidate primary that saw former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia emerge as the party’s candidate for the presidential election slated for December 2028.
We take this opportunity to also commend the Ghana Police Service for the remarkable and efficient manner in which they secured the entire process.
We welcome the collaboration and participation of the NPP and all other political parties in our collective national quest to strengthen and deepen our democracy.
We have also taken note of the reconciliatory concession statements from the other unsuccessful candidates, and hope that they will walk their talk,” the NDC statement read.
Reacting to it, Koku Anyidoho said, “I really love this aspect of our democracy – political parties sending representatives to congresses of sister parties to deliver goodwill messages and also issuing congratulatory messages after major internal elections.
Working in the ECOWAS region, I don’t come across this culture in many countries.
Good message from NDC.
