A six-year-old girl identified as Sarah Ahiafor has tragically drowned in an irrigation pond located in Sonitra, a suburb of Kpetoe in the Volta Region.
The Ghana National Fire Service confirmed this incident in a statement issued on Monday, February 2, 2026.
According to the report, the incident occurred on Sunday, February 1, 2026, when the child accompanied other children to wash clothes at the pond, which is used for irrigation purposes.
Upon receiving a distress call at approximately 1:40 p.m., personnel from the Kpetoe Fire Station promptly responded and initiated a search and rescue operation led by Assistant Station Officer David Dzakah.
Despite their efforts to resuscitate her, the child was pronounced dead.
The body has been handed over to the Ghana Police Service for further investigation and preservation. Preliminary investigations by the GNFS suggest that the drowning occurred due to lack of adult supervision.

In light of this incident, the GNFS has urged parents and guardians to ensure children are supervised around open water bodies, emphasizing that such areas pose significant risks.
“The GNFS advises parents and guardians to ensure that children do not visit or engage in activities around ponds, irrigation sites, and other open water bodies without adult supervision,” the statement said.
The Service extended its condolences to the family and reaffirms its commitment to protecting life and property.
