Asiedu Kokuro, the Deputy National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has clarified that calls for the removal of Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin do not reflect the party’s official stance.
He dismissed the rumors as “mischief” orchestrated by certain individuals and urged the public to disregard them.
Speaking in an interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Kokuro commended the Minority Leader for his steadfast leadership of the Caucus in Parliament. He described Afenyo-Markin as a loyal, dedicated, and indispensable asset to the NPP.
The calls for his removal reportedly stem from allegations by some party members that he campaigned against Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
However, Mr. Kokuro firmly rejected these claims, stating that personal voting choices cannot be used as grounds for dismissal.
Mr. Kokuro emphasised that the party remains united behind Afenyo-Markin’s leadership.
”There is nothing like that. Those making the call for the removal of Afenyo-Markin are engaging in mischief. Afenyo-Markin is a great leader of our party—a very senior, patriotic, and loyal member. I think if you look at his year as the Minority Leader, the industry and capacity he has exhibited is remarkable. Those calling for his removal are acting out of mischief.”
He further noted that the Minority Leader is actively working with the party’s leadership to strategize for the future:
”He remains the Minority Leader of our party, and together we plan to strategize. Yesterday, he was at the Flagbearer’s house to officially congratulate him and pledge the full support of the Minority Caucus. He is one of our great patriots and financiers.”
Addressing the recent internal elections, Kokuro stressed that those seeking leadership changes are merely “engaging in conjecture.” He highlighted that Dr. Bawumia’s victory—winning 14 out of 16 regions—is a clear mandate that proves the Vice President has the overwhelming support of the party.
