Former President Akufo-Addo has lauded former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, characterising him as an individual endowed with profound affection for Ghana.

Through a Facebook post, the former president extolled Dr Bawumia’s exemplary character and sound judgement.

This commendation follows Dr Bawumia’s visit to the former president on Tuesday, February 3rd, 2026, occasioned by his election as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Former President Akufo-Addo reiterated that his decision to select Dr Bawumia as his running mate, a position that later became vice presidency, was informed by the latter’s competence.

He further praised Dr Bawumia as a diligent individual and a stalwart supporter of the elephant family. Dr Bawumia was accompanied by his wife, former First Lady Samira Bawumia, during the visit.

The post by Akufo-Addo read, “Newly minted flagbearer of our great party, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and his spouse, Hajia Samira Bawumia, paid a courtesy call on me yesterday, 3rd February, 2026.”

Eighteen years ago, I chose Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as my running mate. We stood side by side through four elections. I know his mind, his character, his love for Ghana, and his appetite for hard work. He is loyal to party and country. With the full support of our rank and file and the continued generosity of our supporters, I know that he will lead us back to victory.”

Dr Bawumia was officially declared as the winner of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, securing his position as the party’s flagbearer for the next general elections.

Dr Bawumia polled 110,643, representing 56.48 per cent of the total valid votes cast.

The victory was confirmed by Electoral Commission (EC) officials at the party’s headquarters after the collation of results from all 277 constituencies across the country.

“The New Patriotic Party constitution indicates that for a candidate to be elected a presidential candidate, that person must obtain more than 50% of the total valid votes cast.

“On the basis of this result, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia obtained 56.48%. Therefore, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has been duly elected presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party for the 2028 elections,” he said.

A total of 196,462 votes were cast nationwide, out of which 561 ballots were rejected.
