A 25-year-old excavator operator, Gausu Yusif, has been shot dead following an ambush by unidentified gunmen.
His colleague, Charles Essuman, remains in critical condition after the attack, which occurred while the duo was grading a quarry site in the Awutu Kwame Whettey Forest.
The incident took place in the Awutu Senya West District of the Central Region.
According to preliminary reports, Yusif and Essuman were assigned to pave a path into the forest to collect rock samples for a proposed stone quarry.
As the team was operating the machinery to clear the way, unknown assailants on a motorcycle opened fire on them without provocation.
The Awutu Bereku District Commander, Superintendent Edmond Nyamekye, confirmed the tragedy in an interview with Nyankonton Mu Nsem.
He stated that the driver (Yusif) was killed instantly during the gunfire.
The assistant (Essuman) is currently fighting for his life.
A formal investigation has been launched to identify and apprehend the suspects.
