The National Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana, George Ansong, has affirmed that the strike action initiated by the association will persist until their grievances are thoroughly addressed by the government.
The strike, which commenced this week at the University of Ghana, aims to protest alterations to service conditions introduced by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC).
According to George Ansong, these adjustments are unilateral and detrimental to staff welfare, citing inadequate consultation with staff representatives.
The nationwide industrial action will inevitably impact academic and administrative activities across universities, including lectures, examinations, and project supervision.
George Ansong emphasised that the decision to strike was not taken lightly, but it was deemed necessary to bring attention to their plight.
In an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he acknowledged that even final-year students engaged in project work would be affected by the strike.
George Ansong reiterated that as stakeholders, they too have children within the university system and understand the repercussions of their actions.
“We have embarked on an indefinite strike due to the FWSC’s unilateral alteration of our conditions of service without our consent. If the government wishes to prevent the strike from prolonging, which would have significant implications for higher education and student welfare, they must address our concerns. We also demand immediate discussions with the FWSC and relevant government bodies to resolve our grievances and restore confidence in staff condition management. Until a resolution is reached, universities nationwide will remain on strike.”
