The Member of Parliament for the Nsawam-Adoagyiri Constituency and Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has expressed deep concern that the prices of staple food items have surged dramatically, contradicting the government’s claims of price reductions.
According to market reports, the prices of cocoyam, tomatoes, yams, onions, and other essential commodities have skyrocketed.
During a parliamentary session on Friday, February 6, 2024, Annoh-Dompreh noted that the high cost of living is severely impacting various professions, including footballers, nurses, doctors, teachers, and the general Ghanaian population.
Consequently, he has requested that the Finance Minister appear before Parliament to address questions and provide solutions to these economic challenges.
The lawmaker made the call during his contribution to the presentation of the Business Statement for the ensuing week by the Majority Leader, Hon. Mahama Ayariga.
“Cost of living has gone through the roof. Prices of items, including yam, gari, tomatoes and others, have all gone through the roof,” he said, stressing the urgent need for government intervention.
“I think we should programme the Finance Minister to come and brief the House on the measures taken to curb this,” he said, emphasising the importance of timely action to address public concerns.
“The last time before he presented the budget statement, he was all over the place talking to Makola market women. Now is the time he should come and brief us,” he added.
