Ismail Abdul Razak, spokesperson for Hajia Amina Adam—widow of the late Ayawaso East MP, Naser Toure Mahama—has stated categorically that the candidate will “retire” Ambassador Baba Jamal this Saturday, February 7, 2026.
This comes as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) prepares to elect its candidate for the upcoming by-election.
Based on their internal assessments, Razak expressed high confidence that Hajia Amina Adam will secure the party’s nomination and go on to win the by-election scheduled for March 3, 2026.
Speaking in an interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Razak asserted that Hajia Amina Adam enjoys significantly higher popularity than the other contestants in the race. He noted that the campaign team has worked tirelessly to convince delegates of her vision.
“History will be made, and it will be written that Ayawaso East will get its first female MP. That history will begin with her election as the candidate for the NDC. Preparations are far advanced for the contest tomorrow. Whatever we need to do to win the election tomorrow and the by-election, we are doing it,” he stated.
When questioned about comments made by Baba Jamal regarding Hajia Amina Adam’s candidacy—specifically claims that her run conflicts with Islamic beliefs regarding widowhood—Razak noted that the candidate has instructed the team not to engage in negativity.
He emphasised that the campaign remains focused on a solid message intended to win over delegates and prepare for the general contest in March. He further noted, “No form of intimidation or ridicule will affect us because we are determined, focused, and prepared to win. We are guided by the Musah Dankwah survey and are hoping to secure 51 per cent of the delegates’ votes.”
Despite the general consensus that the NDC is favoured to retain the seat, Razak insisted the team is not taking anything for granted.
“We will take the by-election more seriously than the primary. She has become popular in the constituency and has established herself well within the party. However, in the by-election, we will have to convince those not aligned with the NDC of the need to vote for her. In a parliamentary election, you can win by a vote or two, but we do not want that—we want to win massively. The late MP set a record with his percentage, and we want to win massively to send a signal to any future challengers.”
