Tahiru Fabolous, Chief Executive Officer of Fabulous Smock, has expressed confidence in the industry’s potential to attract significant government support, drive market growth, create employment opportunities, and establish Ghana’s presence in the global market.
He reiterated Smock markers readiness to design and export African attire to various parts of the world.
According to him, the recent debate surrounding the fugu, sparked by President John Dramani Mahama’s visit to Zambia, has generated positive reactions and interest in the traditional African attire.
Historically, he noted, fugu or batakari was a prestigious attire reserved for royals, but modernity has made it a popular choice for both royals and ordinary people.
As a member of the Ghana Smock Makers Association based in Tamale, he opined that government support would enable them to export the product.
The fugu, he explained, symbolises courage, royalty, respect, dignity, and prestige, making it a quintessential African attire.
In an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he mentioned that there are different types of fugu for royals and ordinary people and announced that the Association would soon submit a request to the government for support.
“Smock, fugu, batakari is an international wear. It is well respected. The moment you wear it outside Africa, you are easily recognised as an African. President Mahama is one individual who has always adorned himself in batakari. Past presidents wore batakari, but President Mahama tops them all.”
When asked if the increased interest would lead to astronomical price hikes, he assured that prices would remain stable, as it would be unfair to increase prices when the market for fugu has just gained popularity.
