A 53-year-old man, Seth Welbeck, has been taken into police custody for allegedly threatening a law enforcement officer with a loaded firearm at the Accra Circuit Court.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, February 3, following a court hearing related to a separate case involving document forgery charges against Welbeck.
According to an official statement released by the Accra Regional Police Command, Welbeck had appeared in court on a criminal summons.
The situation escalated as he was being escorted to the court cells after the proceedings.
Police reports indicate that Welbeck requested permission from the lead investigator to lock his vehicle, and upon reaching the car, he allegedly retrieved a Smith & Wesson SD9 VE pistol loaded with nine rounds of 9mm ammunition.
It is alleged that Welbeck pointed the pistol directly at the investigator and issued death threats.
However, the swift intervention of the investigator, supported by court officials and nearby witnesses, prevented any shots from being fired, and Welbeck was overpowered and disarmed on the spot.
“The Command wishes to caution the general public to desist from any act of violence, threats, or possession of firearms without lawful authority,” stated Supt. Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region.
