Political analyst Samuel Boateng has called on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to annul the Ayawaso East parliamentary primary, disqualify all five contesting candidates, and open fresh nominations for new contenders.
His recommendation follows reports of widespread vote-buying during the election, where items such as televisions, mobile phones, and motorbikes were allegedly distributed to delegates.
According to Boateng, such activities undermine the foundations of democracy and the rule of law.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Boateng noted that the party must take decisive action if it is truly serious about addressing electoral corruption.
While he commended the NDC for its initial interest in probing the matter, he stressed that a firm stance is necessary to uphold democratic integrity.
“If the NDC believes in democracy and are not hypocrites, they must immediately annul the results. They should also go further by disqualifying the candidates who contested, opening fresh nominations, and allowing new people to file and contest so they will elect a new candidate for the by-election.”
He further criticised the conduct of the current aspirants, saying, “The five persons who contested are not the only qualified or competent persons to represent the party. We need patriotic individuals to serve us and not those who think that they can influence elections with their money so they will win.”
Mr Boateng added that this situation presents an opportunity for the NDC to change the narrative surrounding political corruption.
He urged the party to allow the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to investigate the allegations and prosecute anyone found guilty of distributing money or items to influence voters.
