Foodstuff prices are falling—and we’re monitoring closely – Greater Accra GUTA

February 11, 2026
GUTA

The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the Ghana Union of Traders’ Associations (GUTA), Nana Kwabena Peprah, has expressed satisfaction over the recent reduction in the prices of foodstuffs and other basic commodities across the country.

Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM on Tuesday, 10th February 2026, Nana Peprah said it was encouraging to see prices coming down following improvements in key economic indicators that traders rely on when negotiating with government.

According to him, inflation, which has been one of the main factors driving high prices, is currently around 20 percent, while the exchange rate has also seen significant improvement.

He noted that the US dollar, which was previously selling at about ¢14.8, has now reduced to around ¢12.5 and in some instances close to ¢11.

“These are the main indicators we use in our discussions with government, so it is surprising but encouraging to see that they are improving,” he stated.

Nana Peprah explained that as a result of the drop in the dollar and other costs, prices of foodstuffs and basic items have generally gone down.

He added that fuel prices have also reduced drastically, with petrol dropping from about ¢24 per litre to around ¢12 per litre, a development that has positively affected transportation and the cost of goods.

He further mentioned that items such as clothing and other essential goods have also seen price reductions.

However, he admitted that there are still pressures in some sectors, particularly spare parts, where high demand continues to push prices up.

The GUTA Greater Accra Chairman called on the public to report any trader who has failed to reduce prices despite the improved economic conditions.

“Anything that has not been reduced, people should communicate it to us so that we will know what steps to take,” he assured.

He confirmed that GUTA’s commitment to ensuring fairness in pricing and working with stakeholders to pass on economic gains to consumers.
