The Second Deputy Minority Whip in Parliament, Hon Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has expressed concern over reports of people going missing in Bimbangu and Nanik, Bunkpurugu-Nakpanduri District, North East Region.
Speaking in Parliament, Hon. Shaib linked the disappearances to a chieftancy dispute and communal violence between the Bimbangu and Nanik communities. He cited a February 28 attack that left 3 people burnt beyond recognition, 50 houses destroyed, and 500 homes displaced.
According to him, the conflict began over the elevation of Nanick’s chief to paramountcy status, which was opposed by the Bimbagu community. This led to attacks, destruction of property, and displacement of residents. The Ghana Education Service reported that 20 schools were closed, affecting hundreds of pupils.
Women from the affected communities have staged protests, demanding peace and government intervention. They’ve lost livelihoods, with farming and economic activities severely impacted.
According to community sources, heavily armed men stormed the community at about 5 a.m., carrying out shootings and a series of arson attacks.
Security personnel who arrived two hours later reported that several houses had been torched, along with food supplies.
Jerry Ahmed urged the Minister of Interior and National Security to lead a stakeholder engagement to address the issue, stop politicians from meddling in chieftaincy affairs, and boost highway patrols to curb robbery. He believes resolving these issues will help tackle missing persons cases in the area.
