Mr. Alexander Twum-Barimah, the Deputy Director-General of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) in charge of Enforcement, Control, and Elimination, has addressed social media reports regarding the arrest of a top official from a food packaging brand for alleged cocaine trafficking.
During a recent interview, Mr. Twum-Barimah clarified that the details of the arrest had been misconstrued.
He urged the public to cease speculating about specific food brands, noting that such unfounded rumors could cause significant and undeserved commercial damage.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he emphasized that he never identified any suspect as an employee of a food packaging company.
Instead, he explained that the individual arrested was simply using the products of a popular brand to conceal illicit substances.
“At no point in my interview did I mention any company’s name or a brand name. The level of misinformation in Ghana is alarming. People should stop these things. Those arrested are not workers of the food brands, but people are going about making speculations. We have arrested two different people in connection with two separate cases.”
The Deputy Director-General provided context on the ongoing investigations, revealing that two distinct operations had taken place.
He said case one Involved the seizure of 250 kilograms of cocaine while case two involved an additional shipment of cocaine where the suspect had successfully trafficked substances three times prior to being apprehended.
He noted that NACOC has since engaged with the affected companies to advise them on security measures, as third parties are exploiting their legitimate products for smuggling.
Mr. Twum-Barimah stressed that the Commission would not disclose the names of the brands involved because the companies themselves are victims of the smugglers’ tactics, not accomplices.
“The point is that those arrested concealed the cocaine in the packaged products, but they are not workers. We won’t mention any business name because it will destroy their brands. If they were complicit, we would have mentioned their names.”
