The Member of Parliament for Upper West Akim constituency, Emmanuel Drah, has expressed concern regarding the delayed construction of a promised bridge that poses a significant risk to schoolchildren who cross the hazardous river daily.
He disclosed that recently, a student fell into the river while en route to school.
The MP stated that residents of the Asuoko community in Upper West Akim are increasingly anxious about the continued delay in constructing the bridge.
Despite earlier assurances, no construction work is currently underway.
‘The truth is, only the President has spoken about the bridge. As I speak now, no contractor has been introduced to us, and no work is ongoing. Nobody has contacted me to inform me that a contract has been awarded for the construction,’ he said.
The MP recalled that the late Dr. Omahene Boahen had previously sent engineers and soldiers to assess the site, which raised hopes among the community that the long-standing problem would be resolved.
However, the situation remains unchanged, with a video surfacing of school children dangerously crossing the river.
He further mentioned that although some individuals abroad expressed willingness to financially support the bridge’s construction, Ghana’s established rules and regulations must be followed.
‘In Ghana, we have institutions responsible for such projects. I cannot simply give external individuals the go-ahead to build the bridge without approval from the appropriate authorities. We need authorisation from the Ministry of Roads and Highways before any work can begin,’ he explained.
He added that even without government funding, there are people willing to support the project, but proper approval must be secured.
The danger facing the children has intensified, particularly after authorities instructed the removal of a temporary tree crossing point, forcing children to use riskier routes.
The MP expressed frustration over the lack of progress despite his persistent follow-ups.
‘I have followed up on this issue continuously. If the President is made fully aware of the current situation, I believe he will instruct the necessary authorities to act immediately,’ he added.
