Executive Director of Peace Watch Ghana, Madam Nyonkopa Daniels, has called on the leadership of the cocoa sector to “sit up” and ensure that the ongoing troubles within the industry are addressed.
Appearing on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Madam Daniels argued that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is actively spreading misinformation regarding cocoa issues.
She urged Dr Randy Abbey to take a more proactive stance in countering these narratives.
Madam Daniels emphasised that the leadership must engage more effectively with party communicators. She suggested that providing these individuals with accurate, timely information is the only way they can effectively defend the government’s record.
She proposed a bold move for government appointees to follow which will prevent the opposition from “lying” to Ghanaians about the performance of the government.
She suggested that appointees in government must sacrifice a portion of their monthly salaries and give them to the communicators so they will be empowered to defend the party.
Reflecting on political history, she noted that the party faced significant challenges during the first term of President John Dramani Mahama because communicators failed to adequately highlight his achievements.
She pointed out that while issues in the cocoa sector are long-standing, the previous administration’s failures are now being redirected as accusations against the current government.
With accurate information, she believes communicators can successfully counter opposition “lies” and propaganda.
“I don’t know why the government is allowing the NPP to throw dust in the eyes of the public. It is important that Dr Randy Abbey engages with the party’s communicators. He should sit up and not allow the lies the NPP is throwing around to destroy this government. The government is achieving a lot, and it is important that we communicate that to Ghanaians. Randy Abbey is a media person, so I don’t know why he would allow the NPP to deceive Ghanaians with their lies.”
Madam Daniels lamented that being in opposition is a “terrible experience”, urging the party to do everything possible to protect the government’s image from propaganda and deception.
She also stressed the need for the Deputy Communications Officer for the NDC to step up and ensure that communicators are well-supported.
She noted that Sammy Gyamfi’s Gold Board responsibilities have made him busy, which has subsequently affected the efficiency of the party’s communication wing.
