Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has reaffirmed the vital importance of the Ghana-China partnership in securing national energy stability.
Speaking at the 2026 Sunon Asogli Chinese New Year celebration—marking the Spring Festival and the Year of the Horse—she commended the Sunon Asogli Thermal Power Station for its consistent contribution to the national grid.
The Vice President expressed Ghana’s deep appreciation for the thermal plant’s role in reinforcing the energy sector, particularly during periods of significant power constraints. She emphasised that energy security is not merely a technical requirement but a cornerstone of Ghana’s broader economic strategy.
She argued that reliable power serves as a fundamental prerequisite for the nation’s industrial drive, acting as the primary engine for large-scale industrialisation.
By ensuring a consistent energy supply, the country can foster higher productivity and attract the long-term investment necessary to build economic resilience.
Ultimately, this foundation of stable infrastructure underpins Ghana’s strategic path toward sustainable growth and lasting prosperity.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang noted that the diplomatic bond between Ghana and China has matured significantly, moving beyond formal protocols into robust cooperation across education, trade, industry, and technical exchange.
However, she stressed that the future of this relationship must transcend physical construction projects.
“Development is not built by infrastructure alone, but also by people, cultures and mutual respect,” she stated, adding that enduring partnerships must be anchored in clarity of purpose, accountability and alignment with Ghana’s national development priorities.
Reiterating Ghana’s commitment to “transparent, fair, and mutually beneficial” partnerships, the Vice President viewed the Spring Festival as a timely moment for reflection.
She expressed confidence in the nation’s trajectory for 2026, focusing on the development of resilient institutions and sustainable infrastructure.
