The Member of Parliament for Bimbilla, Dominic Nitiwul, a former Defence Minister, has emphasised the necessity for President John Dramani Mahama to appoint a substantive Defence Minister.
This appeal follows the killing of eight Ghanaian tomato traders by terrorists in Burkina Faso.
The lawmaker is urging the government to provide a comprehensive explanation regarding the recent developments affecting Ghanaian nationals abroad, stressing the urgent need for a fully empowered defence minister to oversee investigations.
He stated that it is not within the purview of the interior minister to handle this matter. Dominic Nitiwul reiterated the importance of having a defence minister in place to coordinate Ghana’s response during times of crisis.
The MP said a substantive defence minister will have the ability to lead investigations into the incident and also ensure timely government action and coordination with security agencies abroad.
“I just think that the Ghanaian government must be explaining to us what happened and the circumstances. I think the government has not yet come out,” he said. “They’ve come out officially with some statement, but we want a detailed explanation, either by the foreign minister or by the defence minister.”
“And that’s why I kept on saying that the President should have appointed a Defence Minister, because by this time the Minister for Defence should have been on the flight to Burkina Faso with his team,” Mr Nitiwul said.
