An 18-year-old man is in police custody following a violent confrontation at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge) that left a security officer unconscious.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, February 18, around 7:30 p.m. at the hospital’s Labour Ward.
According to a statement released by hospital management, the suspect, identified as Gabriel Dimson, had accompanied his mother and a friend to the facility.
The statement signed by the Head of Public Relations, Juliana Haruna, condemned the act, stating they will “not condone any form of violence against staff.”
A dispute arose when the security officer on duty instructed Dimson to proceed to the designated reception area, as visitors are not permitted to congregate at ward entrances outside of approved visiting hours in accordance with hospital policy.
However, the individual reportedly refused to comply, resulting in a physical altercation that rendered the officer unconscious after being pushed to the ground and assaulted.
Following the incident, the officer received emergency medical attention from on-duty doctors and remains hospitalised, although officials confirm he is responding to treatment.
The Adabraka District Police Command apprehended Dimson, and he is slated for prosecution upon completion of the ongoing police investigation.
