A total of 38 fishermen have been successfully rescued after falling victim to a robbery at sea off Senya Breku in the Central Region.
The fishermen, who were aboard two locally manufactured canoes, were rescued by a joint operation conducted by the Marine Police and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).
The rescue effort was initiated following reports that several fishermen were stranded at sea after the attack.
According to eyewitness accounts, the fishermen set out for their usual fishing expedition in the early hours of Thursday, February 26, but were ambushed by armed hijackers in a black boat while returning to shore.
The assailants allegedly opened fire and stole outboard motors and generator sets, leaving the fishermen helpless.
The incident has heightened fears among coastal fishing communities where such attacks are reportedly on the rise.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces have initiated a high-priority search and rescue operation subsequent to an attack on fishing vessels off the Central Region’s coast.
The operation commenced at dawn on Thursday, led by the Ghana Navy with Ghana Air Force aerial support.
The incident reportedly took place approximately 35 nautical miles off Senya Bereku’s coast.
Although the exact nature of the attack and the number of individuals involved remain undisclosed, the Ghana Armed Forces indicated that the mission is currently ongoing.
“The Ghana Armed Forces appeal to all to remain calm,” stated Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director General of Public Relations. “Further details will be communicated as they become available.”
