Governance expert Dr Richard Fiadomor has stated that President John Dramani Mahama’s upcoming State of the Nation Address (SONA), scheduled for Friday, February 26, 2026, must focus on tangible results rather than future projections.
Reflecting on the president’s previous address, Dr Fiadomor noted that the 2025 SONA primarily outlined the challenges the administration inherited and the strategies intended to address them.
However, he emphasised that tomorrow’s speech should highlight specific milestones achieved over the past year, with “less lamentation” about the past.
Speaking in an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM, the expert pointed out that since the President has now completed a full year in office, Ghanaians deserve a clear account of his stewardship.
Dr Fiadomor explained the transition from last year’s expectations to this year’s requirements:
Last year, he delivered a State of the Nation Address.
The contents were mostly projections because he was barely two months in office. But he has been in office for one full year, and we will be expecting what he has been able to achieve and not just projections.
We expect that he will tell us the state of the nation under his presidency based on his records; and going into 2027, he should also tell us what he wants to achieve and how he wants the state of Ghana to be moving forward. So, this time around, we will be expecting fewer promises and more achievements in his first year. He ought to tell us the state of Ghana based on his merits and track record.”
Dr Fiadomor stressed that the President has a fundamental responsibility to account for his performance to the people of Ghana.
