Nine illegal miners have been confirmed dead following a devastating mine collapse at Tontokrom, located in the Asutifi South District of the Ahafo Region.
In addition to the fatalities, four others sustained serious injuries during the incident. They were quickly transported to a nearby health facility, where they are currently receiving medical treatment.
The site of the collapse has long been identified as a hotspot for “galamsey” (illegal small-scale mining). Despite its known risks, the area remains active and volatile.
The disaster occurred despite active interventions by the National Inter-Ministerial Taskforce on Small-Scale Mining (NAIMOS).
The region is noted for its resistance to regulation; authorities recalled that NAIMOS personnel had previously been attacked by locals while attempting to enforce mining laws in this specific area.
