Over 40,000 registered voters in the Ayawaso East constituency are expected to cast their ballots today, Tuesday, March 3, 2026, to elect a new Member of Parliament.
The by-election was triggered by the untimely passing of the sitting MP, Mahama Naser Toure, in January 2026. His death left the seat vacant, necessitating this mid-term vote to determine his successor and restore representation for the constituency.
The race features three primary candidates competing for the seat.
The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has fielded Baba Ali as its representative. Meanwhile, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has selected Baba Jamal, the former High Commissioner to Nigeria, to contest the position.
Additionally, Umar Sanda is running as an independent candidate following his recent expulsion from the NDC.
The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has assured the public that the process will be conducted in a smooth and orderly manner.
Fred Tetteh, the EC’s Director of Research, emphasized in a media interview that all necessary logistical measures are firmly in place to ensure the credibility of the results.
“This by-election, which is a parliamentary type of election, is first-past-the-post. So, one vote can make a difference, so when it is proven that a fraudulent activity took place, then the commission will make a decision.”
