The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised Ghanaians planning to undertake Umrah to reconsider their travel plans owing to the current security developments in certain parts of the Middle East.
This advice was contained in a statement issued by the Ministry on March 2, 2026.
The Ministry suggested that prospective pilgrims who have not yet departed from Ghana should postpone their journeys temporarily until stability returns to the region.
Umrah is a voluntary Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca that can be undertaken at any time of the year, unlike the annual Hajj pilgrimage. The Ministry emphasized that the protection of the lives and welfare of Ghanaian citizens abroad remains the government’s top priority.
For those currently in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia performing Umrah, the Ministry urged them to remain calm, adhere strictly to directives issued by Saudi authorities, and maintain close contact with their travel agencies, the Ghana Embassy in Riyadh, and the Consulate-General in Jeddah.
The Ministry further assured that officials are available to provide information and emergency consular support as necessary.
In Ghana, enquiries may be directed to +233 240 913 284 or +233 240 793 072. Ghanaians currently in Saudi Arabia can contact +966 59 776 2966 or +966 56 818 1974, or reach the Embassy via email at riyadh@mfa.gov.gh.
