The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has retracted and apologized to the Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, over allegations of fraud in the ongoing security service recruitment process.
The Efuttu Member of Parliament offered an apology during proceedings on Wednesday, 4, 2026.
His apology follows a directive by the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor, who referred the Minority Leader to the Privileges Committee over contempt charges after the Interior Minister accused him of making unsubstantiated claims.
On the day President John Dramani Mahama delivered the State of the Nation Address, Afenyo-Markin alleged that the engagement of a third-party IT firm in the recruitment exercise amounted to a scam and imposed high financial costs on applicants.
But he has since he has apologized, saying, “Mr. Speaker, I will not do that to hurt him or tarnish his reputation, and if the text of my concern reflected so, it is hereby accordingly withdrawn. I assure you that concerns that will arise out of any matter shall be properly brought to his attention.”
When called upon to respond, the interior minister apologized, although he expressed disappointment in the comments that were first made.
He then asked that the referral of the matter to the privileges be withdrawn.
He also requested that the comments be expunged from parliamentary records as though it never happened.
“It is painful to be wrongly accused and be labeled differently from the intention that you have, especially when it is connected with heavy wrongdoing. I am heavily hurt and heavily worried, but who am I to say that I will not accept when my colleague comes to apologize? I accept it wholeheartedly. My plea is that, if it is possible, it should be expunged from our records so that it will be as though it never happened,” he said.
First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor, who had referred the matter to the Privileges Committee, then ordered for the comments to be expunged from the records of the House.
He also withdrew the directive for the matter to be referred to the committee.
