Ghanaian children have praised the government for providing free sanitary pads to schoolgirls across the country.

The commendation came during the 2026 President’s Independence Day Awards, where 52 exceptional students were honoured for their outstanding performance in the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

The awardees, drawn from all 16 regions of Ghana and including students with special educational needs, used the occasion to deliver a collective message to President John Dramani Mahama.

Established in 1993, the President’s Independence Day Awards scheme recognises students between the ages of 14 and 19 and seeks to reward academic excellence while inspiring young learners to strive for greater heights.

In their address, the students mentioned the free sanitary pad initiative as one of the most impactful policies affecting young girls in school today.

“We applaud you for understanding the challenges young girls face during menstruation and for graciously giving free sanitary pads to support them,” they said.

According to the awardees, the intervention has eased the burden on families and ensured that menstruation no longer becomes a barrier to learning. They noted that many girls can now attend school with confidence and dignity throughout the month without missing classes.

Beyond the sanitary pad programme, the students acknowledged broader government investments in education, particularly the recognition and encouragement of academic excellence through the awards scheme.

They said such initiatives motivate them to study harder, believe in their abilities, and prepare themselves to contribute meaningfully to national development.

The children further expressed appreciation for the emphasis on local language instruction at the foundational level, describing it as a policy that would strengthen understanding among younger pupils.

“As young citizens and future leaders of Ghana, we are committed to discipline, hard work, patriotism, and excellence,” they affirmed.

They concluded by thanking the president for investing in their future and expressed confidence that Ghana would continue to grow stronger under his leadership.
