Hon. Alexander Akwasi Acquah, Member of Parliament for Akim Oda Constituency, has criticised President John Mahama’s 2026 State of the Nation Address, saying cocoa farmers are not celebrating Ghana’s independence due to unfair prices. “A celebration that cocoa farmers cannot be part of… they have suffered so much to develop, yet the president says he cannot pay them the worth of their toil,” Acquah said, highlighting the plight of farmers.
Acquah relayed farmers’ messages to the president, saying, “If the president wants to cut their hair and take money from their yields, it must start from him and his appointees.”
He urged salary cuts from the Jubilee House, ministers, and government officials, citing the example of his own administration’s salary cuts during tough times.
The MP also criticised government involvement in illegal mining (Galamsey), saying receipts show a municipal chief executive has taken fines from illegal miners. “Does the district assembly take fines from galamseys and then expect taxpayers to pay $35 million to clean the Green River?” Acquah questioned, urging the president to hold appointees accountable.
Acquah also addressed health workers’ concerns, saying they were promised updates on campaign promises and expect the president to ensure they accept postings to rural areas.

Acquah emphasised that health workers expect action on these promises, including scholarships for nurses and allied health workers to pursue PhD-level education. “If you haven’t made any move on these, why insist they go to rural areas when posted?” he asked, highlighting health workers’ concerns.
The MP also referenced the president’s reported comment on the Iran-US conflict, contrasting it with pressing domestic issues. Acquah urged the government to prioritise Ghana’s challenges, saying health workers and citizens deserve action, not just promises.
