Nana Bonsu, a prominent tax advocate, has asserted that the recent arrest of several Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) officials for their alleged involvement in criminal activities is a direct result of intensified enforcement efforts led by the Commissioner General, Mr Anthony Kwesi Sarpong.
Nana Bonsu noted that while these levels of corruption have persisted within the GRA for years, the current administration is committed to “fishing out” those responsible and ensuring they are dealt with ruthlessly.
He emphasised that zero tolerance for corruption is essential, as such illicit activities directly undermine the government’s revenue mobilisation agenda.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM, Bonsu highlighted the shift in oversight:
“What is happening at Customs has existed for years, but the arrest of some officials in recent times is due to the measures introduced by the GRA boss. He has identified activities to deal with all those who are engaging in such acts. The new GRA boss has activated actions that have made it easier for GRA officers, customs officials, and security operatives engaged in corrupt deals to be exposed. Some of these officials are so corrupt to the point that they don’t depend on their salaries because the corruption they engage in gives them lots of money.
But their evil ways are over. The GRA boss will not allow them to succeed. So my advice to these corrupt GRA officers is to stop what they are doing. They will be badly exposed. We cannot allow them to destroy this country through their greed. As workers, you are being paid, so why should you engage in this level of corrupt deals?”
Nana Bonsu reiterated that interdiction is not a sufficient deterrent. He argued that those involved must face full prosecution and be sentenced to prison if found guilty.
In addition to internal corruption, the advocate expressed serious concern regarding reports that several oil marketing companies (OMCs) have failed to file their tax returns, urging the GRA to extend its rigorous enforcement to corporate tax compliance as well.
