The minority caucus in Ghana’s Parliament has released a statement in response to the country’s 69th independence anniversary, highlighting widespread challenges affecting workers, farmers, and the environment.
The statement, issued on March 6, 2026, pays tribute to Ghana’s founding fathers while outlining pressing demands for change.
The minority expressed concern over the mass termination of public-sector workers by the NDC administration, describing it as a ‘regrettable act of governance’.
They have therefore demanded the immediate reinstatement of validated workers, full payment of unlawfully withheld salaries, and appropriate compensation for hardship caused. ‘Justice delayed must not become justice denied,’ the statement emphasises.
On the issue of agriculture, the Caucus raised concerns over challenges confronting rice, cashew, and cocoa farmers. They attribute struggles to unfair prices and detrimental government policies.
It described the reduction of cocoa farmgate prices as ‘unconscionable cruelty’ towards farmers who have historically underpinned Ghana’s economy.
Cashew farmers face an ‘existential threat’, while crops like yam and pepper suffer post-harvest catastrophes, prompting calls for emergency support and fair pricing.
Commenting on galamsey, the minority described it as a national security threat, public health emergency, and intergenerational injustice, urging decisive action.
They advocate economic self-reliance, local industry development, modernised agriculture, and investment in education to equip young Ghanaians with modern skills.
The statement commended the Ghana Armed Forces for responding to fishing vessel attacks but called for strengthened maritime surveillance. It expresses solidarity with Ghanaians in the Gulf region facing insecurity, urging active diplomatic engagement.
In conclusion, the minority renews its covenant with Ghana’s founding ideals, pledging commitment to responsible self-government, sovereignty, and defence of national resources. Signed by the minority caucus leadership, the statement underscores their resolve to hold government accountable and advocate for a just, prosperous Ghana.
