Hon. Charles Akwasi Agbeve, Member of Parliament for Agotime-Ziope, has supported calls for Ghana to criminalise ecocide to combat environmental destruction.
He underscored the need for a law to deter harmful activities such as deforestation, plastic waste, and water pollution and to position Ghana as an environmental leader in Africa.
Contributing to a statement on Monday, March 9, 2026, on the floor of Parliament, he posited that Ghana’s ecosystem is under threat from human activities such as deforestation, plastic waste, and water pollution and that making ecocide a crime will serve as a deterrent to those who would seek to harm the environment.
“We need to take bold steps to protect our environment”, Hon. Agbeve was stressed. “Making a law on ecocide will further strengthen and deter people from destroying the ecosystem or the environment. It’s time for us to take responsibility for our actions and ensure that our environment is protected for future generations.”
Hon. Agbeve lamented that only 11 countries have passed domestic laws on ecocide, with the Democratic Republic of Congo being the only African country.
He urged Parliament to pass the law, positioning Ghana as an environmental leader in Africa. “We should not wait for others to take action,” he said. “We should lead the way and show the world that we are committed to protecting our environment.”
The MP also supported making ecocide an international crime, citing the need for global compliance. “We are not just protecting our own environment, but also contributing to the global effort to combat climate change and environmental destruction,” he emphasised.
Ghana’s environment is under threat, prompting Hon. Agbeve to call for urgent action.
His call has sparked debate and garnered support from MPs, who argue that recognising ecocide as a crime will strengthen environmental protection.
