The Member of Parliament for Bosome Freho, the Hon. Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh, has criticised successive governments for failing to address youth unemployment, citing ineffective initiatives and urging the current government to prioritise meaningful job creation.
Speaking in Parliament, Hon. Ayeh lamented that initiatives aimed at creating jobs for the youth have been ineffective, citing examples such as “Youth in Beats”, “Youth in Bicycle Riding”, and “Youth in Pothole Patching” as mere rhetoric.
He stated that 7 out of 10 youth are unemployed, with many falling prey to empty promises made by politicians during election campaigns.
He recalled the previous government’s initiatives, including the “One-Three-Three” job creation plan, which has yielded little results. The MP questioned the effectiveness of these programmes, asking how they have improved the lives of Ghana’s youth.
The MP urged the current government, led by President John Mahama, to break this cycle and prioritise meaningful job creation for the youth.
He stressed that financing for youth programmes must be a priority, with a focus on commitment rather than empty rhetoric.
Hon. Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh underscored the need for a new approach to addressing Ghana’s youth unemployment crisis, highlighting the importance of equipping and supporting trained youth to become productive members of society.
He said it was important for a more effective and sustainable approach to addressing youth unemployment.
He called for increased investment in vocational training, entrepreneurship programmes, and job creation initiatives that cater to the needs of Ghana’s youth.
The MP’s criticism comes amidst growing concerns about the country’s economic prospects and the ability of the youth to contribute to national development.
With Ghana’s population projected to reach 50 million by 2030, addressing youth unemployment is critical to harnessing the demographic dividend and driving economic growth.
