Railway Workers Union on Thursday, March 19, 2026, picket at the Transport Ministry over the government’s failure to honour the promise to pay their salaries.
According to them, despite the availability of 20.6 million cedis from the sale of obsolete railway materials, which they say was promised to settle 10 months of the arrears, the funds have not been released as was directed by President Mahama in October last year.
The general secretary of the Ghana Railway Workers Union, Benjamin Essuman, explained that three out of the 853 workers have passed on as a result of delay in payment.
Speaking in an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he stated that the impact of the delay in payment has affected them and their families.
He stated that there have been prior meetings with the National Labour Commission, but updates on salary payments have been slow.
He warned that the union would return to picket the Ministry on Tuesday if the issue is not resolved.

“President John Dramani Mahama had directed that the funds generated from the sale of the obsolete railway items be used to pay us; however, that has not been done. An amount of GH₵26 million was accrued from the sales, and it is possible to pay 10 out of the 13 months owed us. It is our candid view that we have been scammed. This is not a situation where you have to look for funds to pay us; the money is available, and so we are wondering why, since December 2025, we have not been paid.
When you ask them the whereabouts of the funds, they tell us the money is with the Ministry of Finance, but we have also concluded they have used the money for other purposes. Three of our members died just last week due to their inability to pay for their medical bills. In total, 20 of our members have lost their lives due to the financial crisis they are going through.”
