President Mahama has indicated that he has instructed the minister for food and agriculture to distribute free fertilisers to farmers this year.
He announced this while speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony for the first District Farmer Services Centre (DFSC) at Takoratwene in the Kwahu Afram Plains South District.
The move, he explained, is to cushion the farmers who he noted have experienced some challenges.
“I have instructed the minister of agriculture to give the fertiliser free of charge, so the fertiliser would not be sold. This is to support the farmers or to cushion them in the face of the challenges they had experienced.”
The government intends to build 50 farmer service centres across the main agricultural producing areas of the country. The first phase will cover 11 centres.
Farmers would be required to register with their local service centres to access a range of support services aimed at improving efficiency and output.
The services include mechanisation support such as tractors, ploughing, harrowing, transport, fertilisers, and shellers for grain processing.
In addition to equipment, farmers will receive training, and extension officers will provide technical advice and guidance to improve production practices.
It forms part of a broader effort to modernise agriculture in Ghana, enhance productivity, and strengthen local agribusiness through innovation and capacity building.
