Austria Thrashes Ghana in Six-Goal Friendly Thriller Following Pre-Match Drama
Ghana’s friendly match against Austria concluded with a 5-1 defeat for the Black Stars.
The team suffered a heavy loss at the Ernst Happel Stadium on Friday.
The match was marked by controversy off the field, following reports of a robbery incident at the Ghanaian delegation’s hotel. Austria dominated the game from start to finish, with some observers noting that Ghana’s disjointed team performance contributed to their inability to withstand the opposition.

Marcel Sabitzer set the tone early with a penalty conversion in the first half, giving Austria a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Ghana showed some promise in the opening 45 minutes, but the second half proved disastrous. Michael Gregoritsch doubled Austria’s lead just five minutes into the second half with a header from a corner kick.
Austria added a third goal by capitalising on defensive lapses before Jordan Ayew scored a consolation goal for Ghana in the 76th minute.

However, any hopes of a comeback were short-lived, as Carney Chukwuemeka restored Austria’s three-goal advantage three minutes later. Nicolas Seiwald sealed the win with a powerful shot from the edge of the box in the 91st minute.
The defeat comes amid reports of a robbery at the Black Stars’ Vienna hotel hours before kickoff, with Ghana’s sports minister confirming the theft of $2,250 in cash and two Rolex watches from player and official rooms.
The investigation has been complicated by non-functional CCTV cameras at the hotel. Despite the Ghana Football Association’s assertion that the team remained focused, the lack of cohesion on the pitch suggests the off-field incident may have affected the team’s performance.
