An investigation into the alleged unauthorised withdrawal of GH₵400,000 from a mobile money merchant’s account has taken a dramatic turn, with police revealing the funds are actually proceeds from a sophisticated gold robbery and fraud scheme.
The investigation, ordered by Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno and conducted by the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB), was initially sparked by claims from Kumasi-based merchant Derrick Okyere Dapaah, popularly known as “Pablo”.
The case traces back to December 8, 2025, when a complainant, Francis Ayaaba, reported being lured to a house in Ntoaso under the guise of a gold deal. Ayaaba told authorities he paid GH₵500,000 in cash and transferred an additional GH₵400,000 via mobile money for the bullion.
“Immediately after making the payment, some armed men showed up at the location and robbed him of the gold,” a police statement confirmed.
Detectives successfully traced the GH₵400,000 electronic payment through several accounts linked to Dapaah.
According to police, the funds were moved between multiple accounts before being withdrawn by one Abudu Dauda, who allegedly used a Ghana Card under a false name, “Isagali Promise”.
Dauda claimed he was acting on behalf of a third party, “Alhaji Ibrahim”.
To preserve the evidence, authorities secured court orders to freeze the accounts and reverse the transaction.
“The GH₵400,000 was withdrawn and is being held by police as an exhibit pending the outcome of the case,” the PPSB noted.
The crackdown has so far led to the arrest of four key suspects.
They are William Nene Sakitey Osabotey, goldsmith and owner of the Ntoaso premises;
Abudu Dauda & Prince Ofori, alleged accomplices in the transaction, and Derrick Okyere Dapaah (Pablo): the original complainant, now charged with abetment of crime.
All four accused persons appeared in court recently and were granted bail.
They are scheduled to reappear on April 29, 2026.
Meanwhile, a manhunt is underway for two remaining suspects, identified as Alex and Alhaji Ibrahim, who remain at large.
