The Ashanti North Regional Police Command has dealt a significant blow to highway robbery operations in the region following a successful intelligence-led sting operation that led to the arrest of seven suspects and the death of a notorious wanted criminal.

The operation, carried out in collaboration with the National Operations Department (NOD) Surveillance Unit from Accra, was a direct response to a violent robbery on March 26, 2026.

During that incident, six armed men intercepted a Ssangyong minibus at the Aframso Bridge on the Mampong-Ejura Highway.

The driver, Appiah Joseph, and fourteen passengers travelling from Kumasi to Atebubu were stripped of their cash and mobile phones.

Acting on precise leads, a special operation team tracked the suspects to the Amakwa Dadey Hotel in Ejura on the afternoon of March 30. Officers moved in as the group was reportedly in the middle of dividing their stolen loot.

While seven suspects—Amidu Sajo, Ibrahim Sule, Karim Hadu, Malik Jibrilla, Yusifa Asakoko, Umaru Issifu, and Damani Yamba—were successfully taken into custody, the eighth suspect met a different fate. Ibrahim Iddrisu, better known as “Bule”, a man already on the police wanted list for various robberies dating back to 2023, attempted to flee.

In a desperate bid to escape, Bule allegedly attacked an officer with a cutlass and tried to seize his service weapon. The confrontation ended when the suspect was shot in the leg and arm.

Though he was rushed to the Mampong Government Hospital and later transferred to Jamasi Pope John Paul Hospital, he was pronounced dead while receiving treatment.

Following the raid, police recovered several incriminating items, including live AK-47 ammunition, three cutlasses, a talisman, and GH₵ 15,717 in cash.

Eight mobile phones and other personal belongings were also retrieved.

Regional Commander ACP Felix Apedo has assured the public that the operation remains ongoing to flush out any remaining members of the gang.

For now, the seven survivors are in police custody assisting with investigations, while Bule’s body has been moved to the Mampong Government Hospital mortuary.

The command continues to urge residents and travellers to remain vigilant and cooperative as they work to secure the highways.
