The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has confirmed that efforts are officially underway to address structural defects identified on the Kaneshie overhead.
Public Relations Officer Mr Gilbert Ankrah disclosed that the Mayor, Mr Kpakpo Allotey, and his technical team have visited the site on several occasions to conduct thorough evaluations and assessments.
Speaking on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s programme Nyankonton Mu Nsem, Mr Ankrah indicated that repair work is expected to commence shortly.
This announcement follows the recent, tragic collapse of the Accra New Town Experimental School building, an incident that resulted in three fatalities and left more than twenty others injured.
Mr Ankrah emphasised that the AMA is committed to a proactive approach, stating that the assembly will not wait for another disaster to strike before taking necessary action.
He further revealed that the mayor has personally provided financial assistance to traders operating near the footbridge to facilitate their relocation, ensuring that repair works can proceed without hindrance.
“There are structural defects on the Kaneshie overhead. The mayor has been there periodically, to the extent that he has used his own resources in giving to the traders to relocate so repair works will start. We do not want disaster to strike before we work. We have asked them to move, but they are yet to do so. Cooperation was critical, and we want that from the public.”
Regarding the tragedy at Accra New Town, Mr Ankrah noted that the pastor operating within the collapsed building had been officially instructed to cease activities a week prior to the incident. He described the collapse as a deeply unfortunate event and extended his sincere condolences to the victims and their grieving families.
The mayor remains dedicated to safeguarding lives and property within the Metropolitan Assembly; however, officials maintain that community involvement is essential for success.
“We need the support of the public to effectively carry out some of these mandates because without the support from the public, we cannot achieve our goals.”
