Two MPs propose 65-year age limit for MPs in private members’ bill

Two members of Parliament, namely Ohene Kwame Frimpong, representing Asante Akyem North, and Ibrahimah Mohammed Zuwera, representing Salaga South, have collaborated to introduce a Private Members’ Bill aimed at amending Article 94 of the 1992 Constitution.

The proposed bill seeks to introduce a maximum age limit of 65 years for individuals aspiring to contest parliamentary seats, thereby preventing those above this threshold from participating in elections across all constituencies.

The two MPs submitted a draft to the Clerk of Parliament on Tuesday, March 10, 2026.

According to them, while the Constitution currently sets 21 as the minimum age to qualify for Parliament, it has no maximum age limit.

They also argued that “parliamentary duties require sustained physical stamina, cognitive agility, and responsiveness to complex policy challenges, including digital transformation, climate change, and global economic integration.”

If the bill succeeds, the MPs believe it would promote sustained performance in legislative duties, reduce risks associated with age-related incapacity, and encourage structured leadership transition within Parliament.

They added that this was in line with international best practices in institutional capacity building.
