A devastating road traffic accident occurred at the Kwashieman intersection in Accra early this morning, resulting in multiple fatalities following a violent collision between a passenger bus and a heavy goods vehicle.
The accident took place at approximately 4:00 am on Good Friday, 3 April, involving a Grand Bird bus and a truck transporting onions.
Travelling from Takoradi to Sowutuom, the bus—reportedly carrying passengers to a religious convention—was attempting to negotiate a turn at the Kwashieman traffic lights.
Approaching from the direction of Lapaz and heading towards Kasoa, the truck entered the intersection just as the light transitioned to amber.
According to eyewitness accounts, the truck driver repeatedly sounded his horn to alert the bus driver of his approach.
Despite these warnings, the bus proceeded with the turn, leading to an intense collision.
The force of the impact diverted the truck from its path, sending it careening into a group of pedestrians who were waiting at the lights to cross the road.
Due to the severity of the wreckage and the scale of the incident, the police have stated they are currently unable to confirm the exact number of deceased and injured.
Formal investigations are underway to determine the precise cause of the crash and to assess the functionality of the traffic signals at the time of the event.
