The National Identification Authority (NIA) has unequivocally denied reports indicating that the Ghana Card can now be utilised for financial transactions, deeming such claims inaccurate and misleading.
This clarification is contained in a statement issued by the NIA on April 8, 2026, signed by Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, Head of the Corporate Affairs Directorate. Darlas emphasised that the Ghana Card has not been enabled for financial transaction purposes.
The NIA cautions the public against relying on unverified information, advising citizens to rely solely on official NIA communications.
“The Ghana Card has not been enabled for financial transactions at this time,” the statement said.
It also announced that high-level discussions are underway among policymakers and key stakeholders in the financial and regulatory sectors regarding the potential integration of the Ghana Card into financial systems.
According to the NIA, these discussions are part of a broader initiative to promote digital identity usage and enhance financial inclusion nationwide. Despite ongoing deliberations, the NIA emphasised that no definitive decision has been made.
The authority assured the public that any forthcoming policy directive or implementation concerning the use of the Ghana Card for financial transactions will be formally announced through official channels.
