The Director-General of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), Brig Gen Maxwell Obuba Mantey, accompanied by his deputy in charge of enforcement, control and elimination, Lawyer Alexander Twum-Barimah, paid a working visit to two centres where NACOC is conducting a drug test for prospective applicants into the security service.

The centres visited were the Ghana National Police Training School and the Ghana National Fire Service Training School in Accra to get first-hand information about the exercise.

The visit marked a significant milestone in NACOC’s evolving mandate, as it was the first time the Commission was actively involved in the medical screening phase of the recruitment exercise in the country.

The Director-General and his deputy, as part of the protocols, engaged medical officers, trainers, and administrative personnel to gain first-hand insight into the ongoing narcotic drug testing process for recruits.

The exercise which is taking place across the country forms part of a broader national effort to ensure that individuals entering the various security services are free from substance abuse and capable of upholding the highest standards of discipline and professionalism.

The drug testing process involves comprehensive screening designed to detect the presence of controlled substances in applicants. The exercise is being conducted with strict adherence to medical and ethical standards, thereby ensuring fairness and accuracy.

At the Police Training School, the D-G and DD-G observed testing procedures and interacted with recruits undergoing medical evaluations to enhance credibility and public confidence in the process.

This new role for NACOC signals a broader shift in Ghana’s approach to security services recruitment, one that prioritises not only physical fitness and academic competence but also behavioural and health standards.

As the exercise continues nationwide, NACOC is optimistic that the integration of narcotic drug testing will contribute to a more disciplined and reliable security apparatus.
